Prepare for an epic adventure that combines giving back to the less fortunate with some serious desert-racing fun! We'll be heading to the stunning Northern Kenya desert for 4 days of unforgettable experiences:

Community Work

Help us deliver books, sanitary towels, pens, and pencils to our brothers and sisters in the north. We'll visit local schools, plant drought-resilient trees with the community, and contribute to a greener future.

Desert Mayhem

Conquer the challenging desert terrain—mud and all! Spectators are welcome to witness the excitement!

Camping Under the Stars

Enjoy nights filled with camaraderie and campfire stories in the heart of the desert.

Event Highlights

- ⛺ Accommodation: Camping at Camp Ndotto, Kalacha and Merille (fees apply). Room accommodations are also available (limited - available on "first come, first served" basis).

- 😎 Activities: Epic road trip to the north, off-road driving, breathtaking landscapes, rock sliding, mountain stream swimming, desert racing, desert camping, and campfires (additional fees may apply).

What to Bring

- Walking: Hiking boots or sneakers, sandals, short pants, hat/cap

- Weather: Dress for warm/hot environments, a warm hoodie for cool evenings, snacks, refillable water bottle

- Sun Protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses

- Food: Bring your own food, drinking water, cooking essentials, utensils, and cutlery.

Vehicle Essentials (for all vehicles)

- Baofeng BF-888S radios (mandatory)

- Double cylinder portable air compressor (optional-recommended)

- Strong tow rope and two D-shackles (mandatory)

- Fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, toolbox with essential tools, car jack, wheel spanner, spare tire

- Appropriate Tires: Mud-terrain or all-terrain tires recommended. No highway terrain tires.

- AWD Cars: AWD cars with high ground clearance are welcome. And their tow hook.

- School Books and Supplies: Bring new or used school books, story books, exercise books, pencils, and pens. Contact Mara Nomads for collection and transportation details.

- Sanitary Towels: Bring sanitary towels or contribute monetarily for Mara Nomads to purchase on your behalf.

- Organizational Contributions: Organizations are welcome to contribute books, sanitary towels, solar panels, etc. Reach out to Mara Nomads for coordination.

  • Departure: We leave at 5:00 a.m. sharp, so please be punctual.
  • Road Conditions: Expect a mix of tarmac, offroad trails, and rugged terrain, but our truck is built for the adventure.
  • Vigilance and Attentiveness: Follow the trip leader’s instructions for a safe journey.
  • Total Distance: We’ll cover approximately 1,200 km, with a blend of on-road and offroad driving.
  • Camping Essentials: Ensure you pack camping essentials, including tents, camping chairs, 12v fridge or cooler box, power station or auxiliary power setup, portable shower tent, water, fuel reserves in jerry cans among others.
  • Timekeeping is Key: Stick to the schedule for a smooth and enjoyable experience.

- 🥳 4:30 AM: Assemble at the designated departure point in Nairobi. - 🥳 5:00 AM: Departure for the North. ☑️Scenic drive through Murang’a, Kirinyaga, and Nyeri counties, with captivating views of Mt. Kenya. ☑️Group introductions and trip briefing along the way. - 🥳 9:00 AM: Short stop at Kisima/Timau for refreshments. - 🥳12:30 PM: Lunch break at Archers Post. - 🥳 1:30 PM: Scenic stop at Mt. Ololokwe for photos and stretching. - 🥳 3:00 PM: Arrive at Ngurunit. ☑️Set up camp under the towering Ndoto Mountains. ☑️Enjoy a refreshing swim and fun at the Ngurunit Rock Slides. ☑️Relax, mingle, and prepare for an evening of bonding. - 🥳 7:00 PM: Dinner prepared by our chef, followed by a relaxing evening around the campfire sharing stories under the stars.

- 🥳 6:30 AM: Breakfast and early morning camp teardown. - 🥳 8:00 AM: Drive through Kargi and Korr, experiencing more of the North’s hidden treasures. ☑️Enjoy desert sunrises, unique terrain, and cultural encounters. - 🥳 3:30 PM: Arrive at the campsite in Merille, nestled near a dry seasonal riverbed. ☑️Set up camp and unwind in the golden sands. ☑️Optional: Explore the area or interact with community members for cultural insights. - 🥳 7:00 PM: Final campfire night: Celebrate the expedition with stories, music, and banter.

- 🥳 5:30 AM: Early breakfast and camp breakdown. - 🥳 6:30 AM: Start the journey back to Nairobi via Isiolo. ☑️Relish the serene sunrise over Northern Kenya’s striking landscapes. - 🥳 12:30 PM: Lunch stop en route. - 🥳 6:00 PM: Arrival in Nairobi. ☑️Final debrief and warm farewells as Nomads part ways.

FAQs

This is an off-road adventure trip and clients will be camping. Camping gear (tents, mattresses sleeping bags, pillows etc. will be required. Not all the campsites have facilities like toilets, showers, and water, so Self-drivers will need to be self-sufficient in water, fuel, equipment, shower tent, food, drinks etc. ✅Camping Gear: Tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, camping chair ✅Cooking Gear: Cooking equipment and utensils (plate, cup, utensils), food and drinks ✅Hygiene: Toiletries, headlamp/flashlight, towels (camping and bath) ✅Camp Setup: Tarp or awning or portable gazebo (optional but highly recommended) More helpful packing lists, advice and recommendations will be shared in our exclusive Desert Run WhatsApp group where participants will be added after registration. ✅The North is hot during daytime. Carry appropriate clothing. Carry 1 pair of sandals or open shoes for daytime, and closed shoes for nighttime to avoid stings or bites. ✅Evenings and mornings can be cool. Include a hoodie, sweatpants and shuka for evening.

Only 4x4s and (select and Nomad-approved AWD cars) are allowed. Only well-equipped and capable 4x4s driven by very skilled drivers will participate in the mud section. 2WD cars are ineligible because of the terrain.

Good quality camping gear (sleeping bags etc.) can be purchased cheaply from the: ✅Carrefour, ✅www.decathlon.co.ke; ✅Jiji - https://jiji.co.ke/ (for Jiji, exercise caution – pay only after delivery and confirmation that the goods are in good shape and genuine) amongst others.

🚨 Early bird special: KES 6,750.00 if you register and pay in full or half before 7th February 2025 (and yes, that's a 10% discount! 🐦). After 7th February 2025, it’s KES 7,500.00. The group tour ends on the 4th day from the start day and at Nairobi - basically, guys will be free to depart to their various destinations back on the 4th day.

🥳 Showers and toilets are available at campsite 1 (Camp Ndotto). 🥳No water, showers and toilets are available at campsite 2 (Chalbi Desert - we will be wild camping, but Overland Truckers will be accommodated separately at a place with some basic facilities such as water, toilets, bathrooms etc.). You can join them if you are averse to wild camping. 🥳Campsite 3 has only very basic toilets and bathrooms, and water. We will be camping on the golden sands of a dry Laggaa.

No. The ruggedness of the north, the climate and the activities in the Desert Run are not kid friendly unless one is a very seasoned Nomad parent, and has prepared themselves sufficiently.
