Step into the wild and embark on an unforgettable journey with Mara Nomads to Malasso Viewpoint of the Lesiolo Escarpment, a place of raw, untamed beauty and one of Kenya’s most awe-inspiring off-grid locations. This overland truck expedition will take you deep into the heart of the Great Rift Valley, where towering cliffs, sweeping valleys, and the vast horizons await those with an adventurous spirit.
The Malasso Viewpoint, famously dubbed “The World’s End” by British explorer Sir Wilfred Thesiger, is the steepest drops in the Great Rift Valley. Standing at the Losiolo Escarpment, you’ll be greeted with a colossal amphitheater that plunges over 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) into the Suguta Valley below. Beyond that lies the faint blue shimmer of Lake Turkana, the world’s largest permanent desert lake. With views stretching hundreds of kilometers, you’ll witness gorges, peaks, and plains that form the striking tapestry of the Rift Valley.
The panoramic views from the top of Malasso are among the most dramatic you’ll ever encounter. As the land suddenly drops beneath your feet, you’ll feel the sheer magnitude of the escarpment as it reveals gorges, peaks, and distant horizons like the Cherangani Hills. The towering “twin towers” of Nataruk volcano stand watch in the valley below, creating a roost for vultures. Whether you’re a landscape photographer, a birdwatcher, or simply someone who craves adventure, Malasso is a paradise waiting to be explored.
On this expedition, you won’t just marvel at the landscape—you’ll also connect with the rich Samburu culture. Meet local communities who have lived in harmony with this rugged terrain for generations, and learn about their way of life at the edge of the Great Rift Valley.
As the day draws to a close, prepare for the spectacle of a lifetime. Sunsets and sunrises at Malasso are nothing short of magical, painting the sky with hues of orange, pink, and gold. And when night falls, the stars will light up the sky, offering a breathtaking view of the cosmos from your wild campsite. After a day of exploration, gather around the campfire, sharing stories and embracing the serenity of this remote wilderness.

Enjoy the rugged terrain and breathtaking landscapes. - 3:00 PM: Arrive in Maralal, (known for its annual Camel Derby and cultural history and for being the home of Kenyatta for 130 days after he was released by the British from prison) and set up camp. - 7:00 PM: Dinner prepared by the chef, followed by a relaxing evening around the campfire sharing stories and soaking in the atmosphere.
- 07:00 AM: Wake up, groom, breakfast and preparations for the day’s adventure. - 8:00 AM: Begin the thrilling offroad drive tackling a stretch of the dirt road north from Maralal towards Baragoi. This road climbs high into the podocarpus forests of the Samburu National Reserve before dropping to the Lopet Plateau and the Elbarta Plains. - 11:00 AM: Kilometres later from Maralal, we turn off the dirt track on towards the most exciting part of this adventure, and soon we are at the dramatic Scimitar edge of Losiolo Escarpment. Here the Kirisia Hills plunge down into the Suguta Valley, creating the Malaso or World’s End Viewpoint, which gives vibes of a gigantic Colloseum of Gods. From this viewpoint, we will enjoy a spectacular panoramic view over the steep dropoff into and across the Northern Rift Valley, up to the Cherangani Hills on the far western side of the depression. Sunsets are just stunning and the place is a paradise for landscape photographers, bird watchers and hikers. - 1:00 to 2:00 PM: After enjoying ourselves thoroughly, taking photos, and videos, and relaxing, we drive back out from the escarpment edge. The land on top of the escarpment is a complete contrast to what we've just seen, the one down the primaeval, little-explored valley. Its pretty meadows of sun-kissed golden wheat, fat cattle being herded home and a dam with water birds frolicking in it. - 4:00 PM: Arrive back at the campsite, after having soaked our souls thoroughly in the serene beauty of Malasso and capturing memories of the natural wonders of "World’s End." - 7:00 PM: Dinner prepared by the chef, followed by more campfire banter and reflections on the day’s adventure.
- 6:30 AM: Wake up, groom, pack, and have breakfast while sunrise viewing at the campsite. - 8:00 AM: Begin the return journey to Nairobi, retracing the scenic route through Nyahururu. - 12:30 PM: Health break in Nyahururu. - 1:00 PM: Continue the drive back, enjoying the final leg of the expedition. - 5:00 PM: Arrive in Nairobi, marking the end of an epic overland adventure.
